Cavit Pinot Grigio Review

Cavit Pinot Grigio Review

Cavit is a company that has been around in the United States market since the 1970s and was one of the first producers to champion Pinot Grigio outside of the Italian wine market.

They are located in Trentino, Italy, one of the absolute Northernmost winemaking regions in the country.

Winemaking is overseen by Anselmo Martini, a 20+ year industry veteran and one of northern Italy’s top oenologists.

Cavit takes great pride in its sustainable vineyard practices, including dry farming, erosion control, the use of natural fertilizer, and sustainable pest control in the vineyards.

Cold fermentation in state-of-the-art, thermo-conditioned tanks preserves the natural fruit and freshness of the wine.

Cavit Pinot Grigio Review

Since bursting onto the international wine market over 50 years ago, Cavit has established itself as a world-class brand at a reasonable price point.

They are the number one selling brand of Italian wine in the United States and have been awarded Wine Enthusiast’s Best Buy Award. On top of all of that, they are certified Vegan and gluten-free.

Cavit Pinot Grigio

Cavit Pinot Grigio

  • Brand: Cavit
  • Country: Italy
  • Region: Trentino
  • Wine Type: White Wine
  • Varietal: Pinot Grigio
  • ABV: 12.5%

Appearance

The wine is crystal clear in the glass, almost to the point of being watery and translucent, with a remarkably light body. Legs on this wine are thin and form and fall quickly.

Smell

The nose is incredibly delicate on this wine. Hints of lemon, mild floral notes, and a certain freshness characterize pretty much the entire aroma of this bottle.

Pears, apple, and stone fruit round out the nose on this one.

Taste

The flavor is as delicate as the nose on this one. It is simple but without flaws or faults.

Gentle lemon, juicy pear, red apples, and a vague note of white flowers (maybe orchids?) make up the brunt of the taste.

This is all framed with an incredibly delicate structure. No tannin, practically no detectable acid, and a watery mouthfeel make this wine remarkably easy to drink. If nothing else, the finish is almost non-existent.

What Does Cavit Pinot Grigiopair With?

Honestly, this is such a simple wine that I would not recommend pairing it with food for the most part. It is mild, quaffable, and easy.

It’s what I have occasionally called “a drinker, not a thinker.” But that is not necessarily a bad thing.

If you really feel the need to pair this with something, I would go extremely mild. Halloumi cheese and younger fontina are solid choices.

Outside of that, I would go with prosciutto or soppressata for meats. Lighter rice and pasta dishes with plenty of herbs and without spice would also be a good way to go for this bottle.

What Wines Are Similar to Cavit Pinot Grigio?

Honestly, as long as they are well made, most Pinot Grigios (with the exception of quality D.O.C. and D.O.C.G. offerings) fall into pretty much the exact same flavor profile.

If you feel like branching out aside from that, I would recommend trying Vermentino sometime.

Vermentino is kind of like what would happen if Pinot Grigio had an older, more interesting cousin. It has pretty much all of the same flavor profile but dialed up to 11, with a bit more body to help give it some substance.

If you decide to give it a go, Punta Crena is one of my personal favorite Vermentino and is imported by a company with exceptional taste. Plus, the price point is nearly as modest as the price point of the Cavit Pinot Grigio.

Final Thoughts

This is a great wine for pool parties, weddings, crowd-pleasing, or just to have a crushable bottle of wine on hand when it is nice outside.

If you are looking for weight, depth, or complexity, I would personally recommend staying away from this one. Then again, for the price point, you don’t have much to lose by at least trying it.
